Your First Visit to Shanti Dhara Wellness: What to Expect
Everything you need to know before booking your first Ayurvedic treatment in Palo Alto — pricing, preparation, and what happens during your visit.
What is Shanti Dhara Wellness?
Shanti Dhara Wellness is Palo Alto's dedicated Ayurvedic spa, offering authentic treatments rooted in 5,000 years of Indian healing tradition. Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, we specialize in five core services: Abhyanga (warm oil massage), Shirodhara (third-eye oil therapy), Podikizhi (heated herbal bolus treatment), Ayurvedic facials, and sound healing ceremonies. Unlike day spas that focus on relaxation alone, our treatments are therapeutic — designed to balance your dosha (body constitution), reduce chronic stress, and address specific health concerns like insomnia, inflammation, or digestive issues.
We're open seven days a week, with flexible scheduling for busy professionals. Treatments start at $38 for a 30-minute session and range up to $328 for our signature 90-minute Shirodhara experience. Most first-time clients book either a 75-minute Abhyanga ($228) or a 75-minute combination treatment ($258) to experience multiple modalities. You can book online through our website, call us directly at (650) 283-9121, or walk in for same-day availability (though advance booking is recommended for weekend appointments).
What sets us apart from other wellness centers in Palo Alto? Every practitioner holds certification in traditional Ayurvedic therapy from accredited institutions in India or the U.S., and we use only organic, sustainably sourced herbs and oils. We don't upsell packages or memberships — you pay per session, and there's no pressure to commit beyond your first visit. Many clients come once for stress relief and return monthly as part of their preventive health routine.
How to Book Your First Appointment
Booking is straightforward. Visit our website and click "Book Now" in the top navigation — you'll see real-time availability for all five treatment types. Select your preferred service, date, and time slot, then complete a brief intake form (10 questions about health history, current symptoms, and any skin sensitivities). This form helps us customize your treatment and select the appropriate oils for your dosha type. The entire process takes about five minutes.
If you're unsure which treatment to start with, our online booking system includes a dosha quiz — a 15-question assessment that identifies whether you're Vata (air/space), Pitta (fire/water), or Kapha (earth/water) dominant. Based on your results, we recommend specific treatments. For example, Vata types with anxiety and dry skin often benefit most from Abhyanga's grounding warmth, while Pitta types with inflammation respond well to cooling herbal facials. Don't stress about getting this "right" — your practitioner will confirm your dosha in person and adjust the treatment plan accordingly.
Phone bookings work too: call (650) 283-9121 — Wednesday to Sunday 10:30 AM to 7 PM, Monday and Tuesday 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM. Our front desk staff can answer questions about treatment differences, recommend combinations, and walk you through the intake form over the phone if you prefer. We accept major credit cards, HSA/FSA cards (Ayurvedic treatments often qualify as preventive care), and cash. Payment is due at the time of service, with an optional 18-20% gratuity for your practitioner.
One heads-up: we have a 24-hour cancellation policy. If you need to reschedule within 24 hours of your appointment, there's a $25 fee (waived for emergencies or illness). This policy lets us offer those slots to waitlisted clients, especially on busy weekends when demand is high.

What to Bring and How to Prepare
You don't need to bring much — we provide everything for the treatment itself. However, here's what'll make your visit smoother:
- Arrive 10-15 minutes early for your first appointment. This gives you time to complete any remaining paperwork, use the restroom, and transition mentally from your busy day into relaxation mode. Rushing in right at your appointment time means you'll start the session feeling stressed, which defeats the purpose.
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. You'll change into a robe or treatment garments we provide, but loose clothes are easier to slip in and out of. Most Ayurvedic treatments involve warm oil, and while we provide towels and shower facilities, you might prefer to leave fancy or dry-clean-only outfits at home.
- Avoid heavy meals for 2-3 hours before your treatment. A light snack is fine (fruit, toast, a small smoothie), but a full lunch sitting in your stomach can make lying face-down during Abhyanga uncomfortable.
- Stay hydrated. Drink water throughout the day leading up to your appointment. Ayurvedic treatments can be detoxifying, and proper hydration supports that process. Skip alcohol or caffeine for at least four hours beforehand; both can interfere with the relaxation response.
If you have specific health concerns — chronic pain, recent injuries, skin conditions, pregnancy, or ongoing medical treatments — mention them in your intake form and remind your practitioner when you arrive. We'll adjust pressure, oil selection, and treatment duration to accommodate. For example, pregnant clients (second and third trimester only) receive modified Abhyanga with lighter pressure and pregnancy-safe oils. Clients with sensitive skin get patch-tested before full-body application.
What Happens During Your First Visit
When you arrive, you'll be greeted at our reception desk and offered herbal tea (our house blend includes tulsi, ginger, and cardamom — caffeine-free and calming). While you sip, a practitioner will review your intake form and conduct a brief consultation. This usually takes 10 minutes. They'll ask about your current stress levels, sleep quality, digestion, and any areas of physical tension. They might check your pulse (traditional Ayurvedic diagnosis) and examine your tongue coating to assess your dosha balance. Don't worry — there's no judgment here, just information gathering.
Next, they'll explain the treatment process step-by-step, answer questions, and confirm you're comfortable with the plan. If you've chosen Abhyanga, they'll describe the oil warming process, the massage sequence (starting with the scalp, moving to feet, then full body), and the post-treatment rest period. You'll be escorted to a private treatment room — dim lighting, soft instrumental music, and a heated massage table draped with organic cotton linens.
During the treatment itself, communication is encouraged. If the pressure is too firm or too light, speak up. If the room temperature isn't comfortable, let them know. If you need to adjust your position or take a bathroom break, that's fine. The goal is therapeutic benefit AND comfort — they're not mutually exclusive. Most first-time clients report feeling deeply relaxed by the 15-minute mark, with some drifting into a meditative or sleep-like state. That's exactly what's supposed to happen.
After the treatment concludes, you'll have 10-15 minutes of quiet rest time while your body integrates the work. Some people feel energized, others feel drowsy — both are normal. Your practitioner will return to check in, offer water or tea, and discuss aftercare recommendations (more on that below). You'll have access to a private changing area and shower if you want to rinse off excess oil, though we recommend leaving the oil on your skin for at least an hour post-treatment so it continues to absorb.
Treatment Options: What's Right for You?
Here's a quick breakdown of our five core services and who they're best for:
- Abhyanga (75 or 90 minutes, $228-$268): Full-body warm oil massage. Best for: stress, anxiety, insomnia, dry skin, muscle tension, Vata imbalances. This is our most popular first-timer treatment because it's comprehensive and deeply grounding. Most clients describe it as "the best massage I've ever had." Learn more in our Abhyanga guide.
- Shirodhara (75 or 90 minutes, $288-$328): Continuous stream of warm oil poured onto your forehead (third eye) for 20-30 minutes, preceded by scalp and shoulder massage. Best for: chronic stress, racing thoughts, insomnia, migraines, anxiety disorders. This is the most profound relaxation experience we offer — clients often report feeling "reset" mentally and emotionally.
- Podikizhi (added to Abhyanga, 75 or 90 minutes, $258-$298): Heated herbal boluses (cloth bundles filled with rice, herbs, and spices) applied to inflamed joints and muscles. Best for: arthritis, chronic pain, sports injuries, stiffness, inflammation. Athletes and people with joint issues love this. See our Podikizhi deep-dive for details.
- Ayurvedic Facial (75 or 90 minutes, $258-$298): Customized facial using herbal masks, marma point stimulation, and lymphatic drainage. Best for: acne, dull skin, fine lines, Pitta imbalances. Uses organic, plant-based products tailored to your skin type.
- Sound Healing (60 or 75 minutes, $158-$198): Immersive experience with Tibetan singing bowls, gongs, and tuning forks. Best for: deep relaxation, meditation support, emotional release, nervous system reset. Can be done one-on-one or in small groups.
Not sure which to choose? Book Abhyanga for your first visit — it's the foundation of Ayurvedic bodywork and gives you a baseline experience. From there, your practitioner can recommend more targeted treatments based on what they observe during your session.
Pricing and Packages
We believe in transparent, straightforward pricing. Here's what everything costs:
| Treatment | Duration | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Abhyanga | 60 min | $98 |
| Abhyanga | 90 min | $135 |
| Shirodhara | 75 min | $155 |
| Shirodhara | 90 min | $185 |
| Podikizhi | 60 min | $110 |
| Ayurvedic Facial | 60 min | $95 |
| Sound Healing (private) | 60 min | $75 |
| Sound Healing (group) | 90 min | $38/person |
We also offer combination sessions (e.g., Abhyanga + Shirodhara, or Podikizhi + Sound Healing) at a slight discount. Ask at booking or check our online menu for current combo pricing.
No packages or memberships required. You can book a single session and never come back, or you can become a monthly regular — totally up to you. We don't lock you into contracts or pressure you to pre-pay for multiple visits. Some wellness centers push 10-session packages upfront; we don't operate that way. That said, if you're planning a series of treatments (e.g., 6 weekly Podikizhi sessions for arthritis), mention it at your first visit and we can often offer a modest bulk discount.
Gratuity: Standard is 18-20% if you're happy with the service, but it's not required. Tips go directly to your practitioner. If you're paying with an HSA/FSA card (which some clients do), you can add gratuity separately in cash or on a personal credit card.
What to Do After Your Treatment
Aftercare is just as important as the treatment itself. Here's what we recommend:
- Leave the oil on for at least 1-2 hours. Traditional Ayurveda recommends keeping treatment oils on your skin for as long as possible so they continue to absorb. If you can wait 4-6 hours before showering, even better. When you do shower, use warm (not hot) water and minimal soap. You want to rinse off excess, not strip your skin completely.
- Rest for the remainder of the day. Don't schedule anything demanding after your appointment. Your nervous system is in deep parasympathetic mode (rest-and-digest), and your body needs time to integrate. Go home, take a nap, read, or just sit quietly. Avoid intense exercise, stressful work tasks, or loud social environments.
- Hydrate generously. Aim for 32-48 ounces of water in the 4-6 hours following treatment. Ayurvedic therapies stimulate lymphatic drainage and metabolic waste release, and water helps flush that out.
- Eat light, warm, nourishing foods. Your digestion will be slightly sluggish post-treatment (normal — your body is focused on internal healing). Stick to easy-to-digest meals: soup, rice, cooked vegetables, kitchari. Avoid heavy, greasy, or cold foods for the rest of the day.
- Avoid alcohol and caffeine. Both are stimulating and counteract the relaxed state you're in. You can resume your normal routine the next day, but skip them for the rest of treatment day.
- Go to bed early. Many clients feel deeply sleepy after Ayurvedic treatments. Honor that. The sleep you get the night of treatment is often the deepest, most restorative sleep people experience in months.

Common First-Time Questions
Do I need to undress completely?
For most treatments (Abhyanga, Shirodhara, Podikizhi), yes, you'll undress fully or down to underwear. You're draped with towels throughout the session, with only the area being worked on exposed at any given time. Modesty is respected, and your practitioner is trained to ensure you feel comfortable. If you prefer to keep underwear on, that's fine — just know it might get oily during full-body treatments.
What if I'm ticklish?
Let your practitioner know at the start. They can adjust their touch — firmer pressure usually reduces ticklishness. The warm oil also helps desensitize areas that are normally ticklish. Most clients find that within 5-10 minutes, the ticklish sensation fades as they relax.
Can I come in with makeup or hair products on?
You can, but we don't recommend it. Many treatments include scalp massage with oil, which will saturate your hair. Makeup will smudge during face and scalp work. Come with clean, product-free skin and hair if possible, or plan to wash your face and tie your hair back before the session.
Will I be oily afterward?
Yes, especially after Abhyanga or Shirodhara. Your skin will be well-oiled, and your hair will be saturated if scalp work was included. We provide towels and shower access, but we recommend leaving the oil on for at least an hour (ideally longer) to maximize absorption. Wear old, comfortable clothes you don't mind getting a little oily. Most of the oil absorbs within 4-6 hours.
Can I bring a friend or partner?
Yes! We offer couples' sessions where you and a partner receive treatments simultaneously in the same room. We also have a waiting area where friends can relax while you're in session. Just let us know at booking if you want a couples' arrangement.
Do you offer gift certificates?
Absolutely. Gift certificates are available in any denomination or for specific treatments. They're popular for birthdays, Mother's Day, anniversaries, and holidays. You can purchase them online or in person, and they never expire.
How often should I come back?
It depends on your goals. For acute issues (high stress, insomnia, pain flare-ups), weekly sessions for 4-6 weeks produce the best results. For general wellness and prevention, once or twice a month is ideal. Many of our regular clients book monthly sessions as part of their self-care routine, the same way they schedule haircuts or dental cleanings.
FAQ
What should I wear to my appointment?
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing in dark colors or old fabrics you don't mind getting oily. You'll change into a robe or treatment garments we provide, but loose clothes make the transition easier. Most clients wear yoga pants or joggers and an oversized T-shirt. Avoid tight waistbands, underwire bras, or anything constricting — your body will be deeply relaxed after treatment, and you won't want pressure. Bring a change of underwear if you want coverage during the massage, and consider bringing an old towel to sit on in your car afterward since your skin will still be oiled.
