What is Shirodhara?

Researchers at an Indian Council of Medical Research centre describe Shirodhara as a classical Ayurvedic procedure of slowly and steadily dripping medicated oil or other liquids on the forehead. In their study the drip landed between the eyebrows, the oil was held at about 40°C, and the volunteers' eyes were covered with soft gauze. On our menu the gently heated oil flows onto the Ajna chakra, the "third eye" point between the brows.

If you're trying to name the spa treatment that runs a stream of warm oil onto the center of the forehead, this is it: the name joins shiro, head, and dhara, stream. It is the treatment people most often choose for a restless mind, difficulty winding down or poor sleep. It is a relaxation therapy, not treatment for a diagnosed condition.

Standard or Full Experience

  • Sacred Shirodhara Therapy, 75 minutes, $288. The core treatment, using a generous amount of Ayurvedic herbal oil.
  • Sacred Shirodhara Therapy – The Full Experience, 90 minutes, $328. Adds a deeper head massage and extra care for the scalp and hair.

If you came here looking for an Indian head massage, the Full Experience is the closest thing on our menu; we don't list a standalone head massage.

The Ethereal Chakra Drip ($268, 75 minutes) is a different treatment: the menu describes a calming flow of botanical essence across the scalp, a water ritual with citrus notes, rather than Shirodhara's herbal oil. Ask when booking if you want to know exactly what is used.

Pairing it with Abhyanga

Shirodhara is often booked after a body treatment, and that order comes from the tradition: the same researchers note that by classical practice Abhyanga is a preparatory step before Shirodhara. To decide between the two treatments, read Shirodhara vs Abhyanga.

What the research shows, and its limits

  • A 2008 randomized study of 16 healthy women in Japan found lower anxiety after 30 minutes of Shirodhara than after lying still for the same time.
  • A 2013 study of 16 healthy volunteers, with no control group, recorded better mood and stress scores, slower breathing and heart rate, and more EEG alpha rhythm after Abhyanga followed by Shirodhara. The authors describe the result as a state of alert calmness.
  • In a 2016 crossover pilot study with 15 completers who reported sleep problems, seven 30-minute sessions with sesame oil improved self-rated sleep quality compared with warm water, but objective sleep measures and daytime sleepiness did not change.
  • A 2014 case series in the United States gave nine people with insomnia five daily sessions; scores improved by the end of treatment, but the difference from baseline was no longer significant a week later.

A 2026 review of Ayurvedic sleep treatments summed it up: the Shirodhara and Abhyanga trials are small, short and hard to blind, and the effects of warmth, touch and attention can't be separated from the treatment itself. That's a fair way to think about it. If you are dealing with insomnia or anxiety as a medical issue, treat Shirodhara as complementary to your doctor's care.

What to expect afterward

Your hair stays thoroughly oiled after the treatment. Many people leave it overnight and wash it out the next day. Come without styling product in, and plan a calm evening rather than driving straight into something demanding.

Who should wait or check first

Skip it if you have a fever, an acute infection, or cuts or irritation on the scalp or forehead. Tell us before booking if you are pregnant, take blood thinners or are being treated for a circulatory condition, and check with your doctor first after a recent head or neck injury. Sesame is one of the nine major food allergens the FDA recognizes, and sesame and coconut are traditional Ayurvedic oils, so mention any sesame or nut allergy.
